Governor's Summer Reading Program: Read with the Bees

School's out for summer, but learning should never take a break. This year Governor and Mrs. Herbert have partnered again with organizations across the state, including KSL's Read Today, the Deseret News, and McDonald's to provide another fun summer reading program: Read with the Bees.

The Governor's Summer Reading Program began with Governor Olene Walker, and continues today as part of Utah's effort to increase educational attainment statewide. Studies show that reading is an important foundational element in education, and with the support of their parents, students who read and are read to have increased cognitive development. The goal of the program is to encourage students to read daily, building skills and learning all summer long.

Throughout his service, Governor Gary R. Herbert has shown a consistent commitment to education.

"I promise you that if you keep reading and learning, and if you commit to finishing your education, you will have the opportunity for a great job and to serve and lead effectively when you are an adult. You will be prepared to make a positive difference -- in your family, in your neighborhood, in your town, in our state and in our great country," the governor has said.

Students who join the Read with the Bees program can win great prizes, while enjoying summer reading. Students, ages 5-14, who want to join in the fun can print out a game board from ReadToday.com. Each time they read 20 minutes, they can fill in another baseball as they move around the baseball diamond. Rounding the bases, students earn prizes such as books, pencils, McDonald's Happy Meals, and finally, tickets to the Salt Lake Bee's game on August 16, 2017. Completed forms must be submitted online by July 31st. All prizes are subject to availability. Details are available at ReadToday.com.
